Black leopards are known from humid and densely adult forest areas in southwest China, Burma, Assam and Nepal, also from Travancore and other areas in southern India and is said to be common in Java and the southern Malay Peninsula. In the latter area, they may be more common than "normal" spotted leopards. They are less common in Africa, but has been reported in both Ethiopia, rain forests around Mount Kenya and in Aberdares.
